This is a great website, because you can put in your US zip code, and it will give you the average price couples paid for wedding expenses in YOUR area--which is a much better marker for you than what the average wedding costs in New York City.  I mean, that works if your wedding will be in NYC, but if not, that average isn't going to mean much to you.  It also breaks it down into categories, ceremony, reception, clothing, food, etc.  Hope it's helpful to you!

I read in Real Simple Magazine that the average budget is around $14,000, but people actually spend almost $29,000. However, I'm curious about where they got these numbers. I wonder if they polled a few hundred people and a couple of them had multi-million dollar weddings, which would pull up the average dramatically. I feel like expensive weddings are wasteful, selfish, and it is terrible to start off a marriage in debt.

Love is beautiful. Why spoil it with materialism?

I think it definitely depends on where you live, and what kind of wedding you want to have.  $25,000 to $35,000 seems to be the norm in my circle.

I've heard 25-30k, which is absolutely ridiculous!!!!  I spend 12K  for 75 people and went 2K over budget.  I was lucky to get a last minute (5 months in advance) bargain at a gorgeous Inn that specializes in weddings.

I am spending about 9K for mine, most people pay about 15 to 20K. Budget shopping is the best way to go you can always get nice things that look expensive when they are not.

I was watching the WE channel for women the other day. I believe I saw a commercial that said that the average wedding today costs about $28,000.
