its a video about the cost of living in japan

you should check out his other videos about japan too

    its pretty funny

  2. It depends on what you plan to do.  And where.

Living in the city of Tokyo, I found a flat (in Akabane) for just 60000 yen and it is gorgeous.  Much better than the apartments I've had in the States.  And it's 2 bedrooms.

I know of four people who live here in Tokyo (in various parts of the city).  They all make around "five-figures" a year and live comfortably.

Traveling in the city of Tokyo in the past, I stayed at military lodgings (The New Sanno for example) for just $35 USD a night.  And those places are grand hotels that rival 5 Star accommodations.

I have friends that live in San Francisco and New York City (I have also lived in these cities in the past).  If you compare Japan costs with the cost of living in those cities, Japan isn't "outrageously expensive," it's just average in cost.  Groceries and public transportation are about equal in cost.

Living in Okinawa is like paradise, and the cost isn't too bad either.  A small flat next to the beach in Chatan is around 55000 (which is high in comparison to the surrounding areas).  You can get a brand new Daihatsu car for under $7000 USD or less.

Yes, gas is almost 170 yen a liter here (which is around twice the cost of gas in the US).  But I can't really think of anything else in Japan priced so surprisingly high that it spins my head in circles...

  3. Mabet has given you some good information, but Tokyo is spread out and I have a feeling that Akabane isn't the Tokyo that you imagine.  It would be absolutely impossible to rent even a one room apartment in a decent building inside the Yamanote line (that's Tokyo) for ï¿¥60,000/month.

I also agree that Tokyo is as expensive or as reasonable as you want it to be.  You don't need a six-figure income to live a good life here.  Public transportation is cheap, restaurant lunches are good value, there are good supermarkets/markets, taxes are low, and if you're willing to live outside the Yamanote, rents are reasonable, as Mabet pointed out.

Don't be afraid and don't believe everything you hear.

  4. Do you make six figures?

  5. It's high. Period.

  6. Japan is one of the most expensive countries in the world, but with some caution you can still live on a budget....a hostel in tokyo cost me $25 USD a night (the cheapest)...a good site you can use to see other japan costs is http://www.WikiCostofLiving.org
