Question:

What is the cost to cancel a health insurance plan through ehealthinsurance.com?

I have health insurance through Anthem Bluecross and Blueshield that I purchased through ehealthinsurance.com during a time that my employer did not offer me insurance. My employer now offers insurance and I am needing to cancel my Anthem Bluecross and Blueshield plan. If I cancel at the beginning of the month (i.e July 1) will I be charged for the full month or will they prorate it down and give me a refund? Also, are there any additional fees that I need to be aware of? I could not get a hold of their customer service team today to cancel and am really not wanting to pay for another full month when I already have health insurance through my employer now. Please help. Thanks.

  1. As  far  as  I  know ,  you  stop  paying ,  they  stop  covering .

No  real  cancellation  fees  I  am  aware  of .

And  health  insurance  usually  covers  with  a  30  day  delay .

Make  sure  your  employers  insurance  covers  July .

Many  start  charges  the  first  month  but  do  Not  cover  until  the  next  ,

( and  you're  usually  covered  for  30  days  after  leaving  the  company )

  2. I think that depends on the plan.  I had a short-term plan I bought through ehealthinsurance and I basically bought 6mos of coverage.  So, in effect I could not "cancel" the plan; I had to simply let the term run out - paying for about 4 mos worth of insurance that I did not need.

    Hope this helps.

    TBD

  3. actually with insurance policies you would pay a cancellation fee to the company, not the agency (ehealthinsurance.com) and secondly, when you cancel you don't get a refund

  4. It doesn't cost anything to cancel, you just cancel.  And, you don't need to go through ehealth, just call Anthem.  Next time you need coverage look for a smaller broker and you'll get much better service.  ehealth is big, but their prices are no better than a local, smaller broker who can deliver better service.

  5. As far as I know Anthem doesn't have a cancellation fee in California, but you will pay for a full month. You need to fax the cancellation request to Anthem at:

    805-713-8845

It doesn't matter who you bought the policy through.

  6. I actually work for eHealthInsurance.com (thanks for shopping with us!), so let me answer your question.  First, I’m sorry to hear you had trouble getting through to our Customer Service department.  Was there a wait on the line?  That’s very rare.  I can confirm that our Call Center has been open since 5am Pacific Time.  The number is 1-800-977-8860.

We’re glad to help you cancel your coverage and get your questions answered, of course, but you may prefer to contact Anthem BCBS directly, since they are the ones who are charging you month to month, not eHealthInsurance.  I can confirm, however, that Anthem does not have a cancellation fee.  If they have already collected payment and credited it toward your policy for the month, they may or may not be willing to provide you with a pro-rated refund, depending on their policies.  When you first obtained coverage through Anthem, did your coverage start on the first of the month?  If it started, instead, on the 15th of the month or some other date, then it may be easier to avoid doubling up your coverage unnecessarily for any length of time.

Congratulations on getting coverage through your employer.  I’m glad we were able to help you out for a while.
