  1. The German government is completely democratic.  All members of the Reichstag, the Bundeskanzler (like a Prime Minister) and the President are elected by the people.

Germay is a peaceful nation today.  The German people are delighful to know.  It is quite a beautiful country to visit, something I highly recommend.

  2. Yes, it's very peaceful allthough the enviormentalist are a little testy. Their recycling program is huge. Deposits on almost every drinking beverage, sorting of public and private trash (you will also get fined if your s***w up, unlike the US where they could but they don't) There are frequent protest (that are peaceful especially against the war when the topic was big, and womens rights and other issues). Mostly on university campuses or a town "platz"  or place ( like you would have a market place or fair). Germany is a demcratic nation, with a parlamentary system. It's very close to a social welfare state ( everyone look up the definition before you get antsy). Everyone has health care, the have extensive social and welfare programs (that are very costly) to off set the costs they are taxed anywhere from 36% (lowest bracket) to 49% (highest bracket). Their prescription drug care also costs more. Some of their welfare programs include things like mutterschutz (maternty leave) is up to five years per child, women are gaurenteed their jobs when they return.  They get 14 weeks paid maternity leave from employeer. After that they receive Eltern geld (for three years) and kindergeld ( till the child turns 18). They also provide nealry free univeristy education.

There cars are smaller and more efficent. Partly do to gas prices (about 7 a gallon) evironment and taxes.

  3. Germany is a wonderful country to visit - the people are friendly and the sights are well-worth seeing (The Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is particularly spectacular.)

The government is fully democratic as previously stated, and you can visit the Reichstag in Berlin (we did - be prepared for long lines though, as it's a popular tourist attraction!)

  4. Good answers so far

    Richard one tiny correction

The Bundeskanzler is elected by the Parliament not by the people directly.

And the President by the Bundesversammlung not by the people.

  5. WW2 wasn't 100 years ago, and yes, of course Germany is very peaceful. The government, while very bureaucratic, is efficient and Chancellor Angela Merkel seems to be pretty popular among Germans.
