  1. .

  2. Bristol City is it's own county, neither Somerset nor Avon.

  3. The county of Avon no longer exists. Bristol has in effect returned to its former status as a city and county.

This is confused because organisations like the Police continue to address themselves incorrectly as the Avon & Somerset Constabulary

  4. Pikey

  5. Bristol is neither a county or anything else, it has the distinction of being one of Englands finest CITY'S it is not a Town or a Village or a Hamlet it is a City it has a Royal Charter to be so, they are only granted on special occasions, the county of Essex has no city's which is a travesty.

  6. AVON

  7. Bristol is unusual in having been a city with county status since medieval times. The county was expanded to include suburbs such as Clifton in 1835, and it was named a county borough in 1889, when the term was first introduced.

However, on 1 April 1974, it became a local government district of the short-lived county of Avon. On 1 April 1996, it once again regained its independence and county status, when the county of Avon was abolished and Bristol became a Unitary Authority.

Bristol is the largest city in the south west of England, with a population of approximately half a million. The city lies between Somerset and Gloucestershire and has been politically administered by both counties in part at various times. However, Bristol is historically a county in its own right and is properly entitled the City and County of Bristol.
