  1. I usually here thunderstorms classified as strong when the winds are 62km/h (39mph) or more. But cyswxman is right. It depends on the meteorologist. but a severe is classified as winds 93km/h (58mph), or hail 2cm (3/4in.)


  2. There is no official specific criteria for terming a thunderstorm "strong", as opposed to severe.  That is more at the determination of the meteorologist.  Severe storms are specifically termed as a storm that is, or appears that it will, produce hail at least 3/4 inch in diameter and/or wind gusts of at least 58 mph (50 knots).
