Im 26 and with a partner - we have been together 2 years. I love children but i really dont want to carry one of my own!! I know that sounds weird to some people. I was thinnking that there are so many children who need foster parents. I was wondering what the criteria is? I know most people who foster have had children of their own and i was wondering if this would go against me because i have never had my own children?

  1. Not having your own children will not "count against" you! Every state has their own list of criteria. Call or visit the Childrens Services office in your county and just ask, they will most likely give you a packet of information and tell you when their fostering/adoption classes will be. You and your partner will both have to apply and go through the classes together. There will also be an in home inspection to ensure the living conditions for the child. There is usually a few months to a yr of things to apply for and classes to go through but like I said every state is different so give them a call to see. Good luck!

  2. Most children's shelters have websites to look at online about fostering. And it shouldn't go against you at all if you've never had children. Some people, after all, adopt without having any children.

  3. Go to your state's government website and look for human services, most have fostering information prominently displayed as there are too few people willing to do foster care!

  4. We fostered to become parents and I know several others who have done the same.  I really doubt any state agency would hold that against you.  Call your social service agency and they will give you detailed information on the criteria for becoming a foster parent.

  5. Every state has different rules...but not having your own children shouldn't be a problem.  They are mainly looking for caring people who has the common sense how to take care of a child.
