  1. The Maleku tribe of Costa Rica is quite unique in that the people speak their own language and are struggling to hold onto their original traditions and customs.  There are only a few hundred Malekus left on the reservation.

Given that there is a great deal of misinformation being dispersed about the tribe, it is our intention is to present accurate information, to perpetuate the history and culture of the tribe, to improve its economy, and to promote its tours and artwork over time.

Throughout the web site whenever possible, we have translated the names of the artistic elements of each piece of artwork into English, Spanish, and Maleku.  We have explained the symbolism of each piece of artwork so that you can better understand the mindset of the artist, David Elizondo-Elizondo who is also known as "Kanherreu" to other Malekus.

While there are other Maleku artists, we have chosen to work with David because his work reflects quality and authenticity and involves no tools other than a knife, paints, sandpaper, and his hands.

We will be gradually adding news about tours to the Maleku reservation and other activities which will provide interest to tourists and increase the economy of the Maleku tribe.  We hope that you will appreciate and support our efforts.
