  1. Costa Rican colon (CRC)

  2. all the guide books tell you that colones are hardly used anymore and just keep some change handy for taxis etc but we found the only times we used dollars was for accomodation and we needed lots of colones. If u pay in dollars you will get your change in a mixture of colones and dollars therefore its easy to get ripped off!

  3. actually paul b. the exchange rate is over 500 colones to the dollar, and has been for over 2 years...

  4. The currency in Costa Rica is called a colon (CRC) and the current exchange rate as of today is 517.93 per dollar.  Dollars are pretty much accepted in major tourist places, examples hotels, beaches, and in San Jose but you usually lose a couple of colons when you pay with American Dollars rather than colons.  I will also advise you to exchange your Dollars at an actual bank it is safer this way.  There are plenty of black market sellers if you will offering to exchange your American Dollars for colons and I wouldn't want you to have a bad experience.

I hope you enjoy Costa Rica I am from there a Tica at heart and want anyone traveling to this country to have only positive things to say.  I hope this helps.

  5. While the Costa Rican money is considered the Colon with a rate of exchange of about 450 colonies to one American Dollar - both Colons as well as American Dollars are used in all businesses, bars, hotels, restaurants, cabs, etc. -

You do not want to get stuck with any Colonies when you come back to the States or return to your home where ever it may be as you may get stuck with the difference in the rate of exchange!

    VIVA LA PURA VIDA!

  6. Colone

  7. Colon........ I am going there on Sunday!
