My friends and I are traveling to New Zealand in late August and we were wondering if it would be more economical to drive, fly, or take the train through either the North or South island. Thanks!

  1. This site shows current gas prices in New Zealand. Hope this helps.

  2. We're paying between NZ$ 2.15 and 2.18 here in Dunedin.

It's certainly still very economical to share a car as you would do, even with those prices.

Most rental cars here get pretty good gas mileage anyway, you might be surprised.

Driving even a biggish car like a Toyota Camry 2.4 four-cylinder automatic all the way from Auckland on the North Island to Invercargill at the tip of the South Island and back will take a maximum of about 350 to 400 litres.

That's under NZ$ 1.000 shared between several people, and you'll be able to stop wherever you want, and take in the scenery and small towns and hidden beaches and walks, which is really what New Zealand is all about.

    My advice:

Try renting a Nissan Pulsar 1.5, as they call the "Sunny" down here, or a Toyota Corolla 1.5 station wagon. It'll take your fuel costs down to about NZ$ 600 for a New Zealand round-trip with about 5.000kms.

It's avery common rental car, quite comfy at any speed, roomy enough for four people with modest luggage, and really economical.

    Have a nice trip!
