My friends and I are traveling to Sydney in late August. We were wondering whether it would be more economical to fly or drive to the Great Barrier Reef or other cities. Thanks!

  1. You should fly at least part of the way to the GBR. The coastal drive from Sydney to Brisbane is mostly scenic and is fairly interesting and the highway is quite good (the inland road is VERY boring), but it's a long way and petrol is expensive. You can expect to pay around $1.70 per litre in NSW and probably more. If there are several of you, driving would probably be cheaper, but Sydney to Cairns is nearly 3000 km. That's a helluva long way and the quality of roads that you'll find only a few hundred km north of Brisbane leaves a great deal to be desired. The 'highway' isn't really deserving of the name for a large part of the distance and it can be narrow and dangerous and very tedious.

The drive from Brisbane to Cairns is mostly dreadful and you don't get 'the ocean on one side and the rainforest on the other' until you're well north of Townsville.

I suggest you fly from Sydney to Cairns and see the Daintree rainforest, go on the Kuranda Railway and do the other far north tropics things. Then hire a car and drive south to Bowen or Mackay, visiting places like Mission Beach and Airlie Beach (the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands) on the way. You could also fly into Bowen or Mackay, hire the car there and head north.

  2. Hi,

    I think you should fly!

Fuel price can be really expensive and it varies around the place.

In some places it is $1.70 per litre other places its something like $1.65 per litre. If you are coming in August there is a good chance that they could go up really high in that short period of time.

I do think you should fly!

  3. petrol has been around $1.60-$1.70 in Sydney and around Sydney....Queensland is a bit cheeper about 10c..... flying to GBR for 2 people would be a couple hundred dollars and depending on the car you have it will be about the same..... If I hadn't seen much of the east coast I would personally drive...road trips are so fun!!!  but if you just wanna get there quick and easy...flying is the way to go!!!  have fun no matter your choice, you are going to have a wonderful time up there!!

  4. In NSW it's around $1.70 a litre- but this flucctuates. In southern QLD it's usually a little cheaper than this but as you drive further north into Queensland (where it becomes more isolated) the price will go up again. In the Cairns area it's very expensive.

  5. It is expensive. You might try the Motormouth website link below for prices within one day of the price. They generally post the prices the day after.

You could try Tiger Airways for pretty good flying prices, but they don't travel to all locations. For comparative prices with the airlines try the last link - I want that flight.

  6. bloody expensive

  7. You will see a lot more if you drive and with three or more people travelling together it could be cheaper to drive than fly. Petrol is selling at around $1.69 per litre at present in Sydney.

  8. Hi,

Petrol (gas) is expensive at the moment, but if you hire a rental car through Avis, it includes petrol, then you have to fill up when need to etc, flying is good, but driving up there are the most beautiful sites, and you don't want to miss them.

Once you land in Sydney, get a conecting flight to Brisbane (by plane will take about 11/2 hours) then hire a car from Brisbane, that is when you will see the gorgeous sites, but if you drive from Sydney it will take 14 hours to get to Brisbane, and OMG what a boring drive, so yeah, fly to Brisbane then hire a car ( 4 wheel drive) once you leave Brisbane & drive towards the GBR the drive is amazing, long, but amazing, the sites are just unbelievable, you drive along and see the ocean on 1 side and the rainforest on the other, and the towns in between are excellent, especially Cairns, you will love Cairns, it is so magical and clean.

I hope you enjoy Australia, it is beautiful and we are friendly, but still keep everything safe, never leave valuables in the car, and just enjoy yourselves.

I hope I have helped, if you google : Australia, then sydney and Brisbane you will see the distance, also the distance between Brisbane and the GBR.

Have fun. I hope you all enjoy Australia

  9. It's around $1.60 per litre give or take at the moment here in Sydney.
