I need to pay an employee for his mileage to and from a learning conference. Having trouble finding the current rate. This will be an ongoing thing, not just a one-time event. If it matters, I am in the Midwestern US. Thanks to all.

  1. .44 a mile

  2. The current IRS rate is 50.5 cents a mile, for 2008.  Many employers use the IRS rate for reimbursement although it isn’t required.

  3. no idea I'm afraid as I live in the UK, where we get  about 13p per mile.

  4. You are free to pay whatever you wish, there is no requirement to even do so.

If you pay the Federal reimbursement rate (what Federal employees are paid by the US government) then your bookkeeping will be somewhat easier.  That rate is currently 50.5¢ per mile.

  5. don't give him anything. was he on the clock?

More importantly, did your insurance cover him if he got killed en route?

50.5 cents a mile is the IRS rate for tax purposes.

  6. The 2008 IRS standard mileage rate is 50.5 cents per mile.  You are not obligated to pay any particular amount, but paying the standard rate is the decent thing to do.
