Gold is often alloyed with other metals.  The proportion is expressed in 24ths.  So 24K gold is pure gold.  10K gold is 10 parts gold and 14 parts something else.  The 14K gold is 14 parts gold and 10 parts something else.

Multiplying $28.73 / gr by 10/24 gives us $11.97 / gr.
