the Cassandra effect. being alone in knowing something terrible will happen

but unable to prevent it as no one else believes.

I think a dark gift is gift given to you or that you discovered that enables you to you dark magic, arts or things that cause bad things like death and bad luck... hope this helps! =]

I know in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles the dark gift is what Lestat called the curse of the vampire.

Vampirism.

In popular culture and vampire fiction it is considered both a gift and a curse.

A curse because you are no longer able to be in the sun, you can never again watch it rise or set, or see the blue sky.  and you are dependant on blood, killing to survive.

It is a gift because you become stronger, and immortal, and powerful with powers and abilities far beyond a human. Stronger, faster, tougher, and often with powers such as telekenisis or the like.

This is fictional of course - *real* vampires - that is, those of the vampire culture, are not any stronger or better then any other human, and can be in sunlight and can live without blood, they simply choose to embrace the night and drink blood from willing donors - but never kill.
