  1. The Federation took legal effect from 1 January 1901.  The first federal parliament sat on 9 May 1901.  

    The first British colony started on 26 January 1788.  

    Other colonies were started after that, by 1840 or so there were six well established ones and by 1860 or so they had their own parliaments and governments.  

    The federation of these colonies as states of a commonwealth was proposed in the 1870s or maybe earlier.
