What is the deal with Cornwall?

I just asked a question whether someone lives or has been to Port Isaac in Cornwall. I wanted to know if it really was that beautiful as it is on Doc Martin, and whether there are many jobs there for an Accountant. I had 5 answers and 4 of them were people arguing over Cornwall, it's origins, whether it's apart of England or not, that the people there are or are not inbred, blah, blah, blah. I'm from Australia so I don't know anything about it, but I am interested. What's the dispute about? When did it start? Why did it start? What's the truth behind it all? Is it or is it not apart of England?! It's on every map of England and it's Governed by English law isn't it?!?!

  1. hahaha ... oh dear !!

yes it's part of England, yes it's governed by English law ... but if you look at where it is on a map, right down the end of a peninsula, you can imagine how in even relatively recent times (especially before the coming of the railway) it was fairly isolated and very distant from the rest of the country ... add to that the fact that it had (again until relatively recently) it's own language, which derives from celtic, of the same family as other Gaelic languages such as Welsh, Irish and Scottish ... and also add that the true Cornish people are fiercely independent and feel very strongly that they should have the same recognition that the Welsh, Irish and Scottish are achieving ... they've had their own flag for a long time, are trying to revive the language and would like more autonomy

Cornwall has been very invaded in the last couple of hundred years, with artists, tourists, people who buy property and turn them into hotels ... at the same time it's lost its industry, all the clay pits and tin mines have closed ... for the tourism industry their heritage of seeing pixies and luring ships in to be wrecked on the treacherous coast has been hyped ... somehow I can't blame them for feeling badly done by ... (you can probably guess I'm not Cornish by the way)

Cornwall is very beautiful but it's not just that, it's the quality of light (which is what attracted all the artists) ... it's surrounded on three sides by sea and in the far west of Cornwall the beaches are white from all the ground up seashells being washed in from the Atlantic ... it kind of "glows" and in the days of manual cameras you had to remember to set your camera shutter speed at a faster setting to compensate ... it definitely is a magic place

  2. its part of england. end of story.

  3. I live about 30 minutes away from Portisaac and haven't been there a great amount. But it does basically look the same as Doc Martin although some of it is actually filmed elsewhere and there is obviously bit of editing to make it look better but other than that its the same. I'm not sure about accountacy in PortIsaac you may be better off setting up an accountacy business elsewhere in towns such as Camelford, Wadebridge or Bodmin. As Portisaac is only a small Village may not be much call for it as there may  local accountants which people go to and you may find it difficult to establish.

Cornish people believe Cornwall is it's own Country as we are separated to the rest of England by the River Tamar. I'm Cornish and I believe Cornwall is it's own Country as we are special but I doubt we would be able to manage without the English Government because of financial issues and the size of the County. Cornish People have always believed that it is a separate Country and I doubt we won't stop thinking that! and we are NOT inbred!

  4. i live in newquay and cornwall is the most stunning county in the country...but i'm biased.
