  2. It pretty much explains everything on the Red Wings Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Red...

  3. Combination of fan loyalty, and business sense.  Started by a guy that owned a seafood market, back when it only took 8 playoff wins to be champs.  8 wins = 8 tentacles of an octipus.

And fans buying octipi to throw on the ice = better busiess for sea food sellers. Become a fan faveriot, that got ruied by Florida, with the plastic mice. It got so bad, the NHL had to take steps and enforce penalties against the home team for delay of game.

  4. Detroit fans love octupus....and all the other answers are correct.

  5. It represents the 8 wins that were once needed to win the cup.

  6. It used to be that a team would have to win 8 games to win the cup and not 16. The octopus has 8 tentacles and each tentacle is symbolic of a win required to win the cup.

  7. It started when a bunch of homeless squatters stole some octopus.  They wanted to sleep in the Joe Louis Arena, but a hockey game was going on.  So they thought, "If we throw the octopus on the ice, they will stop playing the dammed game and they could get sleep."

    Unfortunately, they were wrong.
