What is the deal with the points thing? And what do you get out of it?

The points are just an indication of your progress on the site.  In the early stages  as points and levels improve,  you are able to answer more questions and give answers.,  thus being able to Spend more time here.     On the higher levels  your usage is unlimited  so you are purely here for you own enjoyment  .  and to be of help and interest to others at the same time..
