  1. a person half black and half other color, like Obama

  2. I first became aware of the word from reading about history and that New Orleans was famous for its beautiful mulatto women. I had always equated it with beauty and was not aware of any derogatory meaning.  I had never heard it used in speech until 15 years ago by a beautiful girl who was part Asian and African American.  If it was unflattering, she would not have used it because the girl was quite egotistic. I think that both mule and mutation have a similar Latin roots meaning "change" in life form.  This website may give you an idea of the beautiful women of New Orleans that history talks.
