  1. I believe it means that instead of casting a stereotypical person in a role, they do something different.  For example, Instead of casting a huge star for a lead, just because they're famous, they cast a new comer who fits the role.  Or think for example Robin Williams and Jim Carey.  They're both comedic actors, but both have done psychological thrillers where they are the bad guy. It's not something you expect from them, but they do a great job.  I hope this helps.

  2. In the Hollywood inner-circle it means the director and producers have no idea what they want looks wise and/or they are breaking the norms.

It is a term rarely used in the inner circle anymore as there are very few norms left! Now you can almost bet it is for an inexperienced non-union, low-budget production who will take what they can get. If this is a known casting person/production company then it is highly probable the actors they want (Choices A,B,C,D, E) are unavailable- so they are looking for an alternative actor with a bankable name.

This usually forms into sentences like, My director is risky in his choices but not reckless.... blah blah blah- standard BS for what I said above.

The newbies use the term non-traditional casting still because they are unaware the lingo isn't current. If its in an audition breakdown the chances are, you will be eating a baloney sandwiches for lunch and changing costumes in the back of a very dirty SUV.

  3. Perhaps you can find answers in this general search.

Obviously in some analogy, it refers to a simile such as an artist going outside usual bounderies in painting a landscape with a Celery Green Sky.
