  1. Sorry redbird, a voltage tester will only show voltage it will not show if the receptacle is wired correctly.

    Get a receptacle tester and get one that will test GFCI, (those are the receptacles that have the test buttons on them.) and ARC fault. Arc faults are pretty new, but they are code now and you will start seeing them.

  4. It is called a Voltage Detector.

    The one I use runs on 2 - 1.5 volt batteries and looks like a large pen - it lights up flashing red light AND makes a beeping sound if there is live current running into the outlet.

    It can also be used on extension cords and other wiring if you are not sure if they are plugged in or a live current is running through them.

    If the outlet or wiring is dead - it doesn't react at all.

    The detector is very inexpensive. Around 10 dollars.
