There is no real difference between a boat and a yacht.  Traditionally, a yacht was a light, fast sailing vessel used to transport important people. It still is. Technically, there's no real difference between a boat and a yacht, except that a yacht is aimed at pleasure, whereas a boat is a working vessel.  Many cruisers call their "yachts" boats.

I have always considered the difference to be the way the boat is kept and handled.  30 years ago a 45 to 50 foot boat was considered to be large.  Now personal boats are pushing to well over 300 feet.  

The simple things like proper flag etiquette, proper handling, good maintenance, good seamanship are the things that make the difference to me.  A 150 foot boat named Brew Crew, flying a pirate flag, playing loud music all while throwing a large wake in an anchorage is not a yacht.  A 32 foot boat quietly making its way through the harbor with flags flying on the proper staff(no antennas), lines ready to make the dock and the name having nothing to do with drinking, s*x or overdone nautical puns, is a yacht.

All Yachts are boats but not all boats are Yachts.  A boat is a vehicle or craft on the water.  Yachts are a type of boat, used for private or personal use.  Typically yachts are around 35 ' or longer with mega yachts being 100' or longer.  Some people call sail boats yachts but here on the west coast yacht usually refers to a motor powered boat that is mainly for cruising.  45'-50' fishing boats are called sport fishers and rarely referred to as yachts even though they meet the size criteria so I think the purpose ie cruising has something to do with it as well.

Usually a boat is considered to be for day use.   A Crusier is usually for a full weekend, And a Yacht is considered to travel the seas for long periods of time, with home like settings, like full bathrooms , kitchens, living spaces etc.
