  1. LCD tvs use a liquid crystal diode to display the picture.  The image is illuminated by a back light.   LCD tvs tend to be very bright and perform well in situations with a lot of light, because they rarely experience glare issues.  That being said, if you watch sports or action movies, then you probably won't enjoy the experience of an LCD.  LCDs have definite motion blur issues.   Some higher-end LCDs will have 120hz processing, where the image is refreshed twice as fast as normal LCDs, so the image is smoother.  The best brands for LCD are Samsung and Sony.

Plasma tvs offer much deeper color than an LCD, and are generally easier on the eyes.  Plasma tvs refresh about 4 to 8 times faster than LCDs, and don't experience a lot of motion blur or pixelation.  That being said, Plasma tvs do have a glass screen that will create glare in rooms with a lot of light or windows.  If you generally watch television at night or with the lights off, a plasma will give you a better viewing experience than an LCD.  The best plama brands are Pioneer, Panasonic, and Samsung.

Both technologies last about the same amount of time, about 60,000 hours.
