  1. The popular ones right now are fluorescent rather than incandescent.  The tube is wound up like a corkscrew to fit in a regular lamp.  I bought some recently at Walmart where they had them 3 for about 8 dollars.  I was surprised that they were so bright for the wattage.  I replaced a 75 watt (regular) with a 20 watt energy saver and could hardly tell the difference.  Now if it just doesn't fail in the next couple years I will actually save a little on my electric bill.

There are also some LED lights thaty look promising but right now are kinda pricey.

  2. Ordinary bulbs convert only small portion of the power to light. Most  is converted to heat! So we call them not efficient.

C/F.Lamps,tube lights.sodium vapour lamps and now light emiting diods all make more light with less power and make less heat.

  3. Incandescent long-life bulbs are not a bargain; they cost more for power. That probably includes appliance bulbs, but your power company has better experts you can ask.
