  1. Saw your other question on Pro V1s.   I think of a practice ball as a particular brand of golf ball that is deemed to have slight imperfections in the manufacturing process and the maker stamps practice on the balls and sells them for about half the price of the normal ball.  That is different from a range ball that is made of a solid core and much harder cover so that it withstands the multiple uses, poundings, picking up and washings.  When I was starting out, I used practice Titliests and then practive Pro V1s.

  2. Range Balls are designed basically to last loads and loads of pounding from golfers.

They have to be more durable because of all the hits they take, therefore the covers are much harder and thicker than normal balls.

They will not spin as much because they are very durable, and you need a softer cover to get more spin.

You will find that you will hit normal balls longer and better because they haven't taken loads of shots.

  3. The Difference is the integrity. A retail ball will be built for all types of play while the range ones are for pounding.

  4. I presume you are referring to ProV1 balls labelled PRACTICE, as opposed to Range Balls, so you can ignore most answers above.

Titleist PRACTICE balls simply did not meet manufacturing quality tolerances, almost always due to merely cosmetic defects.

They will react and play identically to a standard ProV1.

  5. Golf balls used at driving ranges are usually harder to better endure the stress of repeatedly being used. Some may be recovered from the rough or water hazards on golf courses, which may reduce their flight.

Practice balls are designed to be used in smaller areas, like parks or even back yards. This is accomplished by several methods, but all result in limited distance and flight time.

  6. Distance.  Practice balls deaden after a while, and normal balls have more life.

  7. the practice balls are harder...   so the don't wear out as quickly and can take the pounding of a bunch of hackers pounding them all day....
