  1. The differences lie in the associations granting the titles and the specialties of the genealogist. The Board of Certification for Genealogists (BCG) grants the title of Certified Genealogists, and those who pass specific tests can specialize in areas such as record finding, lineage specialist, lecturer, and instructor. Accredited Genealogists get their title from ICAPgen, and I believe they usually specialize in specific geographical locations. Both require rigorous testing.

  3. Accreditation allows you to be considered a subject matter expert in a court of law and in most countries you can advertise your services and charge appropriately for them. Certification just means you're a competent genealogist with solid understanding of research methods. Certification is easier, accreditation is by far more profitable.
