I've seen that normal doctors in USA have MDs where as in UK, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc. they have MBBS and MD is a higher degree. Are both MDs the same? Or MD(USA) = MBBS?

  1. Like the guy said.

People who graduate from med school in the UK get either MBBS or MBChB, both the same thing, just different letters.

The MD in the states is also given after graduation from med school.

In the UK though an MD is a further medical degree you can take, most people take an MD if they want to be a competitive surgeon or something.

  2. You are correct in saying that MD (USA) = MBBS (from the countries you mentioned). They are considered as equivalent degrees (1st professional degree in Medicine) because both of them are offered after successful completion of internship (duration of which may vary) following 4 (or 4 and half) years of attending Medical school. MD (or MS) in those non-US countries is a second professional degree in Medicine/ Surgery offered after completion of residency.

However, in order to enter residency program in USA or Canada with an MBBS degree; one first needs to pass USMLE (Medical Licensing Exam- There are 3 steps) and get certified by ECFMG (A body that maintains record of Foreign Medical Graduates). Each country has its own board for a similar purpose.
