What is the difference betweed DVD+R and DVD-R?

I need to buy some blank DVD's to transfer home movies. What is the difference and do they both play on home DVD players?

  1. There is no real difference but because of the + & - the space on them varies ever so slightly. most dvd players will play anything really but you do get some which require either a + or a -. i also beleive that when movies get copied on to dvd, the coding is done according to the dvd type. Hope that helps


  2. They use different dyes inside the plastic disk. So your burner and DVD player have to use the correct color filters to read one or the other.

    If your DVD player can read both - get whatever is on sale this week at Best Buy.  But you have to look. Some players only read the -R disks.

  3. GH seems to be right on that.  I also did somewhat better with DVD+R as opposed to DVD-R. That said, you may have to experiment, because one player may handle one type better than another  player.

  4. There's no real difference except compatibility on dvd players.....so if your dvd player says it plays both then you can buy either + or -.

    The DVD+R usually work best for me though....I've had skipping/stuttering issues when burning movies on DVD-R discs. Like an hour into the movie the picture gets very pixelated and starts skipping and stuttering very badly.
