  4. Britain (or Great Britain, or the United Kingdom) is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - so England is one of four countries which are part of Britain.

  5. England is a country with defining borders. Britain is similar but is the term used during the colonial era to apply to the British empire and its bounds. It also implies a cultural meaning

  6. Britain is the largest island among the three islands that consist of the British Isles. England, meanwhile, refers to the largest country in the United Kingdom.

  7. I am amazed at how many people are confused about this.

England is part of a country called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This is known as "the United Kingdom" for short. Informally, the United Kingdom is usually known as "Britain".

The other parts of the United Kingdom are Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Britain is NOT the same thing as "Great Britain". Great Britain is the island that consists of England, Scotland and Wales.

Nor is Britain the same thing as the British Isles, which means Great Britain, Ireland, and several smaller islands. The Irish Republic (the southern part of Ireland), is a completely independent country.

England is by far the largest country in the United Kingdom. It has a population of 51 million, compared to 61 million for the whole United Kingdom. It accounts for two-thirds of the land area of Great Britain.

The United Kingdom was formed in 1707 by the Union of England and Scotland. (Wales was already united with England by the Act of Union of 1536). Later, in 1801, Ireland also joined the United Kingdom. However, the Republic of Ireland became independent in 1921, leaving just Northern Ireland as part of the UK.

Although the four parts of the United Kingdom are called "countries", they are not independent states. Scotland has its own parliament, and Wales and Northern Ireland have their own assemblies. However, these bodies are all subordinate to the British parliament in London.

England a country on the island of Great Britain - the largest island in the archipelago of the British Isles (many in Ireland object to this term, prefering the Atlantic Isles).

The UK consists of the countries on the Island of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), the province of Northern Island and many of the smaller islands - such as the Isle of Wight or The Isle of Lewis.

If you want to get really confused look up the status of the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

  10. Britain is an informal term that refers to the nations of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The name, Britain,  is believed to derive from a Celtic word, Pritani, "painted people/men", a reference to the inhabitants of the islands' use of body-paint and tattoos; or to the territory in which the Brythonic languages were spoken, which more or less coincided with the Roman province of Britannia depending on which historians you read.

England, which comes from Angle or Angla-land, the name for the Anglo-Saxon kingdom, is the largest country of the United Kingdom.

Shortly put...Britain is the entire United Kingdom, England a country within the United Kingdom.
