What is the difference between (-4)^2 and -4^2?

I am having some trouble with my homework and i want to know if there is a difference between these two exponents. Does the parenthesis change the results???

  1. Yes.  (-4)^2 means (-4)*(-4), which is 16

    Due to the order of operations, you take care of exponents first, so

    -4^2 means -(4*4)=-16
