What is the difference between A and A* grade in O level?

I took gce o level edexcel exam but did not see any mention of A* in their grade categories but i see many gcse candidates talk about A* about their results. So I wonder...

  1. It's just the grade above an A. But it is actually a whole grade above an A, not just like A+ (like the higher end of an A)

    Yeah, it is only a recent thing. I think they introduced it because so many people are applying to Oxbridge that they need to make all the distinctions they can. I think they're bringing A*s into A Levels as well for the same reason.


  2. A star was only introduced recently, as so many people were achieving A grades, so they needed a way of seperating who was better out of all the A grade pupils. A star is better than A
