  1. There is actually very little difference. They are evolving to become closer and closer.

    The major differences:

ACT essay is optional, SAT its mandatory

    ACT has science, SAT doesn't

SAT directly tests vocab, ACT doesn't

ACT tends to include some questions that require background knowledge, especially in Science and Maths. These are rare on the SAT.

ACT is out of 36, SAT is out of 2400.

ACT has 5 long sections (50-60 min), SAT has 10 short sections (20-25 min)

The SAT has more name recognition throughout most of the country (except the Midwest), but both are accepted at nearly all colleges and universities. It does not matter which you take. In fact, it would be advisible to take both as you may be better at one format and there is no way to tell without trying. Studying for one will help on the other because of their similarities.

  2. ACT means: a segment of a performance, such as a play or opera

SAT means: past tense of sit...

  3. SAT tests skills.  It doesn't really test for specific content knowledge, instead it covers wide areas of Math, Reading, English, and Writing skills.

ACT tests skill in the above areas, and content in science.

You can take both, I plan to have my daughter take both.

  4. Yes, you can take both, and you might want to consider doing so as some students do significantly better on one rather than the other.

The ACT consists of math, reading, writing and science sections.  You take all of a subject at once (so you take a long, 45-minute block of math, then switch to reading, etc.).  The essay prompt tends to be more practical and realistic, whereas the SAT essay tends to be abstract.

The SAT does not test science, and the subjects are broken up into smaller portions (anywhere from 40 minutes to 20 minutes).  Personally, I thought the SAT was easier, although I know that the majority of people find the ACT easier...
