What is the difference between Airport Transit visa and Transit visa?

For the Shengen Area: Airport Transit means you cannot leave the international area of the airport - where you do immigration-. Be aware that you are only allowed to stay there  while that area is open (so you cannot stay overnight or catch a connection in different aiports even if in the same city). With Transit visa you can exit the airport and if needed do an overnight or however many days you need to catch the flight to your destination. If you plan to do a layover of more than a day you need to show why it is more convenient or necessary to do that itinerary.
