    Andy has it pretty well right. The real difference is capacity.

    CD & DVDs are simply for media storage be it music or data. Music ir really stored as data and decoded by your cd player.

    When I back up my digital pictures and only have a few I put them on a CD. If I have a lot I use a DVD. The real difference to the consumer is capacity.

    A CD holds about 700 Mb, a DVD single layer 4.7 Gb or almost seven times as much and a DVD-DL holds 8.5 Gb or about 12 times as much as a CD.

    Naturally the more the capacity the higher the cost so use the media with the lowest capacity that meets your requirements.
