What is the difference between Counted Cross Stitch and Crewel?

In counted cross stitch, you count the threads on the fabric to determine where the threads intersect.  At the intersection of the threads you place a cross stitch. No design is printed on the fabric.

With crewel embroidery the outline of the design is printed on the fabric and a  variety of different stitches are used to fill in the design.
