Several years ago, there were two camps, the +R and the -R camp.  You had to choose your media type and buy the right kind of DVD burner.  Nowadays, anything you buy will support either format, making them essentially equivalent.  There are subtle differences in how information is recorded on the different formats, but it's transparent to the user.
