  1. Those number represent the displacement of the engine and indicate the overall "size" of the engine.

Think of the cylinders (the space in which the pistons go up and down in) as a glass of water.  The larger the glass the more water it holds. Same with the engine.   So an engine with more liters has a larger displacement and in relative terms, more power.

But size does not always equal power.  Some manufacturers can squeeze huge amounts of horsepower out of a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine while other cars may have a very mild 3.4 liter V6 engine.  That's why cars like the Evo and WRX are faster and more powerful than most V6 cars yet they have smaller engines.

Smaller engines are lighter and can generally be built up to run quicker than larger engines.

  2. the 3.9 and the 4.0 are most likely ford V6's and the 4.6 is the V8. So you will get more power and acceleration with the v8 and you will get a bit better fuel economy with the v6.

If your concerned about fuel economy then get the v6, but for me its the v8 and a manual transmission.

    Good luck!

  3. The bigger the engine, the more gasoline it uses too. Don't forget that extra power comes with a price.

  4. The only difference is size. If you want more power, the best way to get that most of the time is by getting a larger engine.
