GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) are two competing standards in cellular service. They are different in how they turn voice data into radio waves and how the carrier connects to the phone. Other differences include coverage area, the data transfer speeds and the type of hardware used.
They both have derivatives for use with 3G phones known as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)
