  1. LCD's are liquid crystal displays, take a good look at your digital alarm clock, that's an LCD. It basically shoots the light from the bulb into a diffusion panel and scatters light evenly into the liquid crystals. Depending on the amount of electric  current trying to pass through the Liquid crystal, they will either open or close to reveal their color forming your image.

Plasma Screen's hold cells which contain a mixture of noble gases (xenon and neon). When you turn it on the electric current that passes through excites the gases and creates plasma and then excites phosphor creating the image on your TV.  You have to be careful though because you can "burn" images onto the screen by leaving them on for to long.

If you are going for a bigger TV (37" or bigger) get a plasma. They can produce deeper colors than LCDs can.

  2. Both plasma and LCD sets produce excellent pictures.

What advantages does plasma have over LCD?

Apart from better contrast due to its ability to show deeper blacks, plasma screens typically have better viewing angles than LCD.

Viewing angles are how far you can sit on either side of a screen before the picture's quality is affected. You tend to see some brightness and color shift when you're on too far of an angle with LCDs, while a plasma's picture remains fairly solid.

Apart from being price competitive, LCD has the edge over plasma in several other key areas. LCDs tend to have higher native resolution than plasmas of similar size, which means more pixels on a screen.

Personally I would recommend to buy plasma. Plasmas give you more bang for your buck at the big end of town, and while LCDs can give you better resolution, plasma still has the edge in terms of picture quality. One other thing to look for, whether you opt for plasma or LCD.

But if you are tied on budget and if you are going to use it only for games, then your choice is LCD TV.

Consider to buy it on-line, much cheaper.

Another thing is if you are going to buy LCD TV, buy 720p, not 1080p, you'll save few hundred bucks and wouldn't feel the difference.
