From NY: I want to go back to college to become a teacher. But I would like to work as a teaching assistant while I am going back. I am registered to take the ATAS exam in a week. I already have an associates degree and would like to know if the difference of Level l,ll, & lll is the amount of college credit earned or is it also the time spent as a teaching assistant. Does everyone have to start at Level l regardless? I can't find any info on the state or TEACH sites to tell the difference or how to apply for different levels, the requirements etc. - only registration for the ATAS, which I did. Can anyone out there enlighten me?

  1. It depends on the local school district.  Some districts even have a level 4 or other titles for their aides.  Typically, level 1 is general education.  Level 2 may be for mild disabilities in a resource pull-out or inclusion program.  Level 3 is for students with severe disabilities in day class settings.  Most districts I know if will let you pursue any of these in any combination in any sequence, depending on your interests.  It is also likely that having higher level certification will allow you to teach at the lower and less intense settings without the other credential, but not the other way around.  Check with your local paraprofessional union and district for details.
