  1. Public transport - Melbourne have a more reliable transport system utilising trams, trains and buses.

    Sydney have trains, buses and ferries but most of their transport has a terrible reputation for being late.

    Weather - Melbourne experience a more fluctuation of weather, theyre more likely to experience bush fires in summer and get colder winters. It is a known fact that they tend to experience all four seasons in one day.

    Sydney perhaps is more likely to have a longer lasting downpour when it rains resulting in flooding and the like.

    City area's - Melbourne's city is contained mainly within the city circle area being a big block of city surrounded immediately by suburbia.

    Sydney's city is more spread and merges into the suburbs.

    Population - Sydney has a higher population of 3,879,400 (96 census, would be higher now) Melbourne has a population of 3,283,000 (96 census).

    Geographics - Sydney and its surounding areas are located along the coast slowing merging into the western suburbs, it is based around the Sydney harbour which stretches out to Manly, Parramatta, etc..

    Melbourne is a more inland city with the yarra river running along its cities edge. Suburbs are more inland in Victoria, being so due to the size of the state.

    Cost of living/housing - Sydney is more expensive in terms of housing and costs of living, that being said Melbourne is hardly on the cheap side of things.


  2. Sydney is in your face - ie Opera House,Harbour and the Harbour Bridge. It does have a train service to the airport

    Melbourne has hidden secrets - Arcades and Lanes, Gas Flames, Hidden Bars and lots and lots of shopping. Also more restaurants,cafes and bars in Melbourne. Plenty going on here all year round eg The Australian Open, The Grand Prix, Food and Wine festival, Comedy Festival, Speigeltent to just name a few. Also has many theatres and Art Galleries. There is no train service to the airport but there is a shuttle bus

    Sydney is more expensive than Melbourne either living there or as a tourist.

    Melbourne has trams. Also has a free tram and a free shuttle bus. As the city is built on a grid system it is quite easy to walk  around unlike Sydney.

    Melbourne has a fantastic Visitor Centre offering a free guided walk around the city.

    Sydney weather is hot and humid usually and lasts later into the evenings

    Melbourne has good weather though with some late evenings. It can sometimes be a little windy.

    Melbourne has a bigger casino than Sydney

    Melbourne gets a public holiday for the Melbourne Cup each November.

    Both places are great and have different things to offer. Melbourne is a very liveable city
