What is the difference between PCI-E 2.0 and the older PCI-E ? ?

i have a PCI-E motherboard with a PCI-E VGA card .. can't i install a PCI-E 2.0 on my motherboard ?

  1. NO, you CAN'T use a 2.0 on the old 1.0 PCI-E slot!!! Don't even try that, you might damaged the card.

    You can however install a 1.0 card on a 2.0 slot (known as backward compatibility) but not vice versa. Please note!!


  2. No. They are different technologies, and a PCI-E 2.0 will not fit into your VGA slot. You will need to get a new motherboard if you wish to install a PCI-E 2.0 card. There are VGA cards still being made, however. Check to see if the card you want comes in VGA format. Keep in mind, that it will not perform like it would if it were inserted in a PCI-E 2.0 slot, as the PCI-E 2.0 slot allows 16X speed.
