I was reading the match results for residency and I could not figure the differnce between those and internship, and whether you need to have a State's medical board authorization to get into internship or what?

  1. PGY = post graduate year

    PGY-1 = post graduate year 1

    PGY-2 = post graduate year 2

    etc.

Some specialties, such as anesthesiology, ophthalmology, radiology and others, require a PGY-1 year to be done before starting the specialty residency.  For those, you can match both programs at the same time, so you know where you'll spend your PGY-1 year, and where you'll go after that.

Internship = PGY-1 year  Same thing.

I'm not sure what the requirements are for residency positions, but you can't be licensed yet, so you don't need a State license.

    Hope that helps.
