The prefix and suffix are known as affixes and are differentiated by their placement against a word, they are both added to a root word to change its meaning.
Common prefixes include un-, mal-, dis-, non-, mini-, mid- while common suffixes are -s, -es, -ed, -ing. They depend on the root word, it precedes or succeeds and cannot stand alone.
