What is the difference between a Cantonese cuisine restaurant, and a Chinese food restaurant?

  1. cantonese originates specifically from southern china so its a certain type of chinese food.  it can be served at the typical chinese place but if the restaurant is labeled as "cantonese cuisine" then they will most liking only serve the dishes inspired from that region.

    it can be compared to an american restaurant versus a new orleans cajun restaurant. some american food places may serve gumbo and crawfish but a new orleans restaurant may specially specialize in it.

    China is composed of different regions with different cooking styles and ingredients.

    Canton is in Southern China where rice, vegetables, seafood and meat or dominant.  Flavors are savory, slightly sweet and flavorful.  Not much chili is used.

    Flavors - Oyster Sauce, Soy Sauce, Fermented Black Beans, Soy Bean Paste, Salted Dried Fish, Salted Preserved Turnips and other veggies.

    Spices - Garlic, Ginger, Onion, Cilantro
