What is the difference between a DVR and a PVR?

  1. Same thing, different name.


  2. DVR records onto DVD, PVR records onto hard drive

Although many people use the term interchangeably, some take DVRs to be dumber devices that only provide "digital VCR-like" behavior.  Specifically, some people consider devices that only provide time and channel based recording to be DVRs, while smarter devices with full electronic program guide and advanced series-based recordings would be considered PVRs.

    Again, this is just one interpretation of the difference.  In the end, there are lots of devices these days, and they are not all created equally.  Some have more advanced EPG and recording capabilities.  Do you research!  ;)

  4. Digital video recorder (DVR) or personal video recorder (PVR) is a device that records video in a digital format to a disk drive or other memory medium within a device.

    So there the same thing.
