  1. A king rules a kingdom and an emperor rules an empire. Traditionally, an empire is larger than a kingdom, and an Empire may contain several kingdoms, - as the British Empire did at one time, and the ancient Chinese Empire did, so an Emperor outranks a King.

  2. An King can only rule one country, and has to give his throne to a son or daughter.

An Emperor can rule more thna one country, and doesn't have to give his throne to a son or daughter.

  3. A king is less then an emperor. In a emperor more then one king may be.

  4. A king rules over one kingdom, one population with one principle culture and one main language.

An emperor rules over more  than one country, with several populations, and usually rules over other kings of those countries.

Charlemagne was an emperor because he ruled over Germans and Franks.

Queen Victoria of England was an Empress because she ruled over Great Britain (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) and over India as well.  India had its own ruling princes, khans, and rajahs.

  5. don't forget guys, an Emperor does not have to pass on his throne to a son or daughter.

emperor's can rule more than 1 country.they don't have to be crowned by the church, but can do themselves.

a King is not under an emperor, (no sir)
