  1. I dont have a source but I think there kind of synonyms. Generally when someone talks about a pool table they are refering to an american table usually 7 to 9 feet with wide pockets.  A billiard table can mean a snooker, a carim table(pocketless), or a bumper table. There are many more variations of billiards than most people realize because the game has been around for a millinea. I've mostly thought that "billiard" is a european thing. Hope that helps.

Generally, billiard table is used to refer to a carom billiards table with no pockets and pool table is used to refer to the table with six pockets.  To confuse matters, sometimes, pool is referred to  as pocket billiards.  In the US, snooker tables and bumper pool tables are rarer, so they are generally referred to by their names directly.
