  1. Usually defined by the type of area

  2. A street has houses and usually two ends

An avenue has trees on either side (originally two rows of trees to mark a path)

    A crescent is crescent shaped

A close is a dead end street

A cul de sac is the same as a close, its French for bottom of the bag

A road covers all the above

  3. It depends on local usage. Generally, there is no difference but in New York City, streets run east-west, avenues run north-south. Salt Lake City dispenses with the names and just uses numbers and cardinal points. Very confusing at first, but logical.

  4. It's basically three names for the same thing. Just depends on how fancy they wanted to get when they named them. Streets are usually in a city, roads go from one area to another, and an avenue is a fancy street, usually in a business section.

  5. It depends if you mean colloquially, or technically. They are generally inter-changeable, but for the technician:

A street is usu ally in a city-centre, and is usually a thorough-fare, a way past building etc.

An Avenue is usuall a road / street in a residential area (and is often tree lined).

A Road is a route to somewhere - so you would have a road from Wigan to Manchester - it tends to lead somewhere specific, whereas streets and avenues do not have to lead anywhere specific, as long as they provide access to and around either city or residential areas.

Most of these meaning, or intended uses are now almost completely lost nowadays, but town planners and road builders will usually acknowledge them.

  6. A street is a road in a town with houses on both sides.

An avenue is usually a broad road with trees along the way, sometimes the entrance to large building.

A  road  is a way designed for traffic normally cars could be pedestrians

  7. A road usually goes somewhere further away ie another part of town or to another town. Avenues originally had trees at the side of the road. I am not sure about streets but I think streets run off of main roads.

  8. Hiya, from what I have seen in the past, streets are usually found in cities, avenues are found in suburban residential areas and are usually tree lined, and as for roads you will find them anywhere!

  9. A street is paved, an avenue is two one- way streets much boulevard separated with and lined with trees, a road is many considered something rural and possibly dirt
