  2. they the same

  3. Both are very similar, but, to me, a canteen implies a smaller place that has simple food (sandwiches, salads) that are ready to eat and pre-packaged to-go while a cafeteria offers more variety and serve meals on a plate or to-go.

  4. what does the dictionary say...???

  5. A hotel has a cafeteria for its guests and a canteen for its staff.

Today, cafeterias are commercial entities while canteens are normally found in factories, hospitals, schools, etc - they exist primary to provide service to the workforce of the place; and are not dependent on the outside general public to turn a profit - this is evident in private companies, factories where visitors are normally barred. Canteens and cafeterias do exist  side by side in public institutions like hospitals.

Many canteen operators enjoy subsidies from the companies which they serve; the subsidies are intended to keep prices of food items "low" so that the company's staff/workforce would benefit. Bear in mind, this workforce is the only catchment for the canteens - the workforce are discouraged from eating out due to regulation, time, or distance.

Although cafeterias and canteens differ in structure and style, both essentially are F&B outlets - only the business model varies.
